Japanese encephalitis is a viral disease which is transmitted by mosquitoes. If you are travelling to a risk area for this disease, you should get the first dose of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine 5 weeks before you travel in order to be able to complete the course in time. The course consists of 2 doses. The second dose needs to be given ideally 28 days after the first. You are protected from 7 days after the second dose. The vaccine protects you for at least 12 months. You need a booster 12-24 months later to remain protected after one year. It is administered by injection into the upper arm. Suitable from the age of 3 years.
